SVA’s role in Swedish work against antibiotic resistance

The Swedish veterinary agency (SVA) is a national expert authority with a focus on infectious diseases in veterinary medicine. The work includes diagnostics, preparedness, research, and advice. All these parts contribute to the Swedish work against antibiotic resistance with the motto that healthy animals do not need antibiotics and that it is better to prevent than to cure diseases.

Specific mandates for SVA regarding antibiotics and antibiotic resistance are:

  • Monitoring of resistance in bacteria from animals and food
  • Support for prudent use of antibiotics in animals
  • Support the Board of Agriculture in work to monitor of sales and use of antibiotics in animals
  • National reference laboratory for antimicrobial resistance in bacteria from animals and food

Every year SVA, together with the Public Health Agency of Sweden, publish the Swedres-Svarm report in which data on consumption of antibiotics and resistance among bacteria from both humans and animals is presented. The agency also coordinates the network Strama VL that strives to provide a platform for knowledge sharing regarding work against antibiotic resistance.
