Among other things it is stated that: “Feed shall not be placed on the market or fed to any food-producing animal if it is unsafe” and that feed shall be deemed to be unsafe if it is considered to “have an adverse effect on human or animal health” or “make the food derived from food-producing animals unsafe for human consumption.”
SVA:s role within feed safety issues is diversified. We have a strong collaboration with the Swedish Board of Agriculture (Jordbruksverket) regarding feed safety legislation on EU- and national level. SVA performs those risk assessments which are basis for the official control of feed performed by the Swedish Board of Agriculture and by the county administrative boards. We provide advice and perform counselling in the industrial feed sector. SVA also has highly developed chemical instrumentation focusing on analyses of mycotoxins and drugs in feed.
Feed safety hazards may be categorized into chemical and microbiological hazards. In addition, physical objects that can cause injury or harm do exist. Microbiological hazards are e.g. pathogen bacteria like Salmonella and Clostridia. Chemical hazards can be heavy metals, dioxins, PCB and other, as well as mycotoxins (toxic agents produced by moulds) and algae toxins, where both groups are chemical hazards of microbiological origin.
