Effective vaccination of layers - a prerequisite for a sustainable egg production and animal welfare in flocks with outdoor access
Erysipelas is an infectious disease causing acute disease outbreaks with high mortality and egg production losses in commercial laying hen flocks. For animal welfare reasonss, affected flocks are usually euthanised in advance. Knowledge on how to prevent the disease is therefore of utmost importance.
The aims of the project are:
- to better understand the immunological mechanisms in laying hens vaccinated against erysipelas, how the immunity varies between individuals and flocks and for how long immunity remains.
- based on the results and new knowledge produced, produce recommendations on erysipelas vaccination in laying hen flocks.
