The chicken immune response to Erysipelothrix rhusiopatiae

Outbreaks of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae infection is a growing problem for Swedish egg producers. Organic producers are especially likely to be affected. In this project, we will investigate how the chicken immune system fights different types of the bacteria through the process known as phagocytosis, and how the effectiveness of the immune response depends on previous exposure to E. rhusiopathiae. The aim is to better understand the infection process, providing information that can be used to improve existing vaccines.
