For the laboratory to be well prepared it is very useful if the person submitting the samples can predict when they are to be expected.
Amount of faeces to be collected per sample
For the analysis to give a correct result, at least 25 grams of faeces should be analysed per sample.
Therefore gather if possible at least 50 to 75 grams per jar.
Sampling strategy
Faeces samples for salmonella analysis can be collected in two different ways.
Either the samples are collected individually animal by animal (1 animal – 1 sample – 1 plastic jar). These samples can then be analysed one by one or be pooled five by five at the laboratory.
Another sampling strategy is to take so-called “pat samples”. Faecal samples are collected from the floor from several places so the sample represents all the animals in the pen.
The sender determines, in consultation with the responsible authority (the Board of Agriculture/veterinarian appointed by the Board of Agriculture/ County veterinary officer), which of these strategies that will be used.
There are special referrals forms for the various sampling strategies. This is to simplify the job for the sampler as well as the staff in the laboratory.
After collecting the samples and putting them in their transport packaging (return envelope/cardboard box with return label) the referral form is completed according to instructions. Thereafter the samples may be sent to SVA. To avoid cross contamination jars and referral forms should be kept as clean as possible on the outside.
If possible, the sampling should be organised so the parcel can be at SVA the day after sampling. If samples are taken on a Friday, it is better to keep them in a fridge over the weekend and post them on Sunday afternoon.
If there are large amounts of samples it is advisable to send them to the laboratory early in the week to avoid extra work for the staff during the weekend. Please contact the salmonella laboratory for more information.
